  1. First restaurant job?

Snack bar at the softball fields but real restaurant job was at Togo’s, a sandwich chain in California while in High School.

2. What’s a food / drink you always have on hand at home?

Topo Chico mineral water and ground beef. You can make a ton of quick meals with ground beef.

3. What is the origin story of the start of your family business, Custom Business Solutions?

My father borrowed 50K from his mom to purchase a cash register dealership that was owned by an old German couple in the late 80’s. The dealership sold to all types of businesses, restaurants, grocery, retail, prisons etc. In the early 90’s, we sold all of the other types of businesses to focus on restaurants and only restaurants. Selling electronic cash registers and basic POS have been here the whole time.

4. Why did you start the Restaurant Technology Guys Podcast?

I get the privilege to talk with multiple restaurant and technology brands each day. Getting information out to help the restaurants to operate better, smarter, and more efficient is my passion. Failure rate in restaurants is too high and if I can help just 1 restaurant not make a mistake with a technology purchase, I want to do that.

5. What are a few of the emerging technologies you are keeping an eye on?

3rd party delivery has taken off much faster than anyone expected due to the pandemic and consumer adoptions. 7 Years ago when my daughter was born, I had no idea what DoorDash was. Now it's synonymous with restaurant delivery. Having those orders seamlessly integrate back to your system of record is critical. Managing the different order flows is critical to delivering on the guest experience. Technology can help with this. Order accuracy, out of stock, and ticket timing all can be helped with integration between the 3rd party delivery and your restaurant technology.

6. Best advice for restaurateurs on understanding which technologies are best for their operations?

First you can subscribe to the show. Restaurant Technology Guys is on all of your favorite podcast players. In general, they need to know who they are, what their brand promise is to their consumer, and then pick technology to enhance that experience. Technology for tech sake is worthless. Technology should be considered to create a more consistent guest experience, better efficiency for your team, more options for your guest, and smoother order flow.
